ISAQ Event Talk:
Leif Cocks and his story saving orangutans from extinction.
Orangutans share 97% of human DNA and are incredibly intelligent and peaceful beings. However, pressures on its habitat has caused both species of Orangutans (Sumatran and Bornean Orangutan) to be at risk of extinction in the wild. This is made worse by Orangutan’s low birth rate and the continuation of the illegal wildlife pet trade.
This 23rd October 2016, the Indonesia Student’s Association of QUT (ISAQ) and The Orangutan Project team invites you to attend ISAQ Discussion Series with Leif Cocks, founder and President of The Orangutan Project. Leif will talk about the state of Orangutans along with his work and dedication conserving the wonderful Orangutan and its habitat through The Orangutan Project. Leif was previously the head primate keeper at Perth zoo with a special affinity with Orangutans. He gave up his day job to work full time with The Orangutan Project and has been since dedicating his life to saving Orangutans and reintroducing them into the wild.
The Orangutan Project is an Australian not-for-profit that works hard to save Orangutans from extinction by saving and protecting Orangutan habitat from illegal clearing and poaching, funding local people to surrogate hundreds of orphan Orangutans (for up to 8 years), reintroducing Orangutans to a saved habitat, educating school children about conservation, and aiding villagers in efforts to successfully prosecute owners of big companies that conduct illegal forest clearing.
